ATONEMENT
“Atoning Sacrifice”
Romans 3:25
(Vs 25 ) God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his
blood. He did this to
demonstrate his
justice, because in his
forbearance he
had left the sins committed
beforehand unpunished.”
Hebrews 2:17
(Vs 17) For this reason he had to be
made like his brothers in
every
way, in order that he might
become a merciful and faithful
high priest in service to God, and
that he might make atonement
for the sins of the people.
1 John 2:2
(Vs 2)
He is the atoning sacrifice for our
sins, and not only for ours but
also for the sins of the whole world.
1 John 4:10
(Vs 10)This is love: not that we loved God,
but that he
loved us and sent his Son
as an
atoning sacrifice for our sins.
“Atonement”
Merriam-Webster's Collegiate
Dictionary:
to gain or regain the favor or goodwill of :
appease, conciliate....something that
propitiates; specifically : an atoning
sacrifice synonymy see pacify
“Atonement”
William
Barclay’s Summary:
(1) Of Man – means to
placate or pacify
someone injured or offended.
(2) Of God – means to
forgive; that God
Himself provides the means of forgiveness.
(3) Combination of the Two – some deed
by which God is not so much pacified as man is “disinfected” from the guilt of
sin.
“Atonement”
William Barclay:
When John says that Jesus is the hilasmos
for
our sins, he is, we think, bringing all
these
different senses into one. Jesus is the
person
through whom guilt for past sin and
defilement from present sin are removed.
The
great basic truth behind this word is that
it is
through Jesus Christ that man’s fellowship
with God is first restored and then maintained. --The letters of John and
Jude.
The Need For Atonement
n The Wrath Of God Is Real
Hebrews 10:31
“
It is a dreadful thing to
fall into the hands of the living God”
Hebrews 12:29
for our "God is a consuming
fire."
2 Thessalonians 1:9
“They will be punished with
everlasting
destruction and shut out from the
presence of
the Lord and from the majesty of
his power.”

Nature Of Sin Revealed
2 Corinthians 5:21

us, so that in him we might become
the
righteousness of God”.

Commentary
on Romans, pp. 133-134: "But sin could not be seen to be sin until the
cross. That is, it's only at the cross that the depth of sin's depravity is
made clear. God's view of sin wasn't understood at its deeper level until the
cross. Our view of sin could not get to a deeper level until we saw GOD on the
cross being abused by sin. Satisfaction for sin is found in Christ, among other
reasons, because only in him can sin be really known and so repented of. And if

Christ is merely a man, then sin's crime
here at the cross was to slay a fine man, the finest man; but only a man. But
Christ was God manifest in flesh and the crime committed by 'ordinary' sins was
a crime against God himself. Satisfaction is found only in Christ because we
have in Christ's death God's word against sin and our unholy work of sin. The
death of Christ enables God to set aside his judicial wrath against us without
setting holiness aside or making light of his law.”

your cause. Moulton and Milligan define; “a friend of the accused person, called
to speak to his character, or otherwise enlist the sympathy of the judges.” Wuest's
