THE PATTERN OF NEW TESTAMENT BAPTISM

n    We consider today the Biblical purpose of baptism.

n    To study Baptism is not to just present dull facts, but is thrilling in its great spiritual application and lessons.

DEFINITION

n    In the Greek dictionary, the word baptizo, immerse ( to dip, plunge, dunk, submerge, immerse.)

n    By translation and definition it is immersion (Acts 8:36) “What hinders me from being immersed?”

As we study the scriptures:

WE CAN NOTICE HOW BAPTISM ACCOMPLISHES SEVERAL THINGS WHICH EXPLAINS ITS IMPORTANCE.

I. WHAT BAPTISM IS FOR.

          1. Baptism is into the

              possession of

             (Matthew 28:19)

“Therefore go and make disciples of  all nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father and of

the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”

n What is the difference between Matthew 28:19 and Acts 2:38?

-Matthew= Baptized into the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

-Acts= Baptized in the name of Jesus Christ

n    There is a difference: (Acts 2:38)

Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 2:38 “In the name of”-means ‘By

       the authority of’.

-Jesus is both Lord and Christ. He            is God.

-If Jesus is Lord I must bow to His        authority.

-If Jesus says ”Be Baptized”, I

                have no other choice.

Matthew 28:19 “In the name of”- means,

     into the possession of.

            - Thus, the one baptism, belongs to

the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

n    If you were baptized in the name of Paul; would you have belonged to Paul?

n    (I Corinthians 1: 12,13)

    What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul";

       another,“ I follow Apollos"; another, "I  follow Cephas;

still  another, "I  follow Christ. “Is Christ divided? Was

Paul crucified for you?  Were you baptized into the name

      of Paul?
-- If you were baptized in the name of Paul; you would have belonged to Paul.

n

 BELIEF AND BAPTISM

(Mark 16: 15,16)

He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is

baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe

        will be condemned.

n     Question: When is a person saved?

n     Answer: When his sins are remitted?

…When he becomes the possession of Christ.

(Matthew 28:19)

   2. SINS WASHED AWAY

 (ACTS 22:16)

And now what are you waiting for?  Get up, be

baptized and wash your sins away, calling on

         his name.‘

The time of His sins being washed

away, was the time of His

calling on the Name of the Lord.

   3. Into Christ and into His death (Romans 6:3)

“Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into

Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?”

(Acts 4:12)

“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other

name under heaven given to men by which we must be

     saved.“

( II Corinthians 5:17)

“ Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;  the

old has gone, the new has come! “

   4. NEWNESS OF LIFE

(Romans 6:4)

“We were therefore buried with him through baptism

into death in order that, just as Christ was raised

from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too

      may live a new life.”

              - Into one body

(I Corinthians 12:13)

“For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body–

whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were

all given the one Spirit to drink.

  5. Clothed with Christ

   (Galatians 3:26,27)

“You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,

for all of you who were baptized into Christ have

         clothed yourselves with Christ.”

  6. Baptism and a clear conscience

   (I Peter 3:21)

“…and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves
you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but

the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves

you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,”

       - It enables us to appeal to God for a

          clean  conscience.

       - You cannot scripturally baptize people

          who have a spiritually clean

          conscience.

II. WHO IS BAPTISM FOR?

       -Discipled people are baptized

         (Matthew 28:19)

           - A disciple is one who is taught,

              who believes and makes a

              commitment.

           - Babies are not taught

              disciples.

       - Baptism is for people who have

         committed sin and are

         responsible for that sin.

          -Baptism is part of faith

                (Hebrews 11:6)

“And without faith it is impossible to please God,

because anyone who comes to him must believe that

he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly

       seek him.”

                           (Ephesians 2:8)

“ For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-

-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—”

-BAPTISM MUST BE PRECEDED BY REPENTANCE (ACTS 2:38)
