WE WILL SET UP OUR BANNERS
Psalms
20:1-7
1 “May the LORD answer you when you are in
distress
may
the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
2 May
he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you
support from Zion.
3 May
he remember all your sacrifice and accept your
burnt offerings.” Selah
cont.
4 “May he give you the desire of your heart
and make all
your plans succeed.
5 We
will shout for joy when you are victorious and will
lift up our banners in the name of our
God. May the
LORD grant all your requests.
6 Now
I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he
answers him from his holy heaven with the
saving
power of his right hand.
7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we
trust in the name of the LORD our God.”
“…
WE WILL LIFT UP OUR
BANNER
IN THE NAME OF OUR GOD.”
The word ‘Banner’ occurs only in
this Psalm and in SONG OF SOLOMON 5:10, Where it is translated,
‘OUTSTANDING’ or
‘CHIEFEST’
“… THE CHIEFEST(THE
BANNER)AMONG
TEN THOUSAND”
… It really means, “ The Standard Bearer
Among Ten Thousand.”
The Challenge for each of us is
to rally around the standard bearer; the chiefest among ten thousand,
THE LIVING LORD HIMSELF
Historical
records tell us that armies in the process of military campaigns always marched
UNDER THE BANNER or STANDARD which represented their loyalty.
Francis
Scott Key confirms the truth of the matter in the national anthem:
“ and the rockets red glare
the bombs bursting in air
gave proof through the night
that our flag was still there”
A
flag; a standard; a banner can make the difference between a mighty advancing
army and a confused, unorganized mob.
-Today’s
masses are tossed about
by every wind and wave.
- A great need of this day is for
something in which people can
BELIEVE, a song the masses can
sing, a FLAG, a banner;
which
they can follow.
•
Let us set up our BANNER
•
Let us establish our STANDARD
...By doing so we fulfill our
mission by leading people out of confusion and darkness.
WHAT MUST OUR
BANNER BE?
- “There’s a royal banner given for display to
the soldiers of the king.”
- As an ensign fair we lift it up today while as ransomed ones we sing
- Marching on, marching on for Christ count everything but loss
- And to crown Him king we’ll toil and sing beneath the banner of the
cross.”
The
hymn tells us that for the
Christian there is a banner for
display
- It is the….
BANNER OF THE CROSS OF
CHRIST
- It is the banner under which we
must live
It
is the banner under which we must march into a lost world with the good news of
salvation
“… in the name of our God, let us
lift
our Banners.”
I. OUR BANNER MUST MARK OUR ALIGNMENT
- The banner, the flag; is used to identify who we are.
Throughout history, men have been identified by their
banner or standard.
Men Choose Many Banners Under Which To
Live
-
The banner of..
POWER, WEALTH, POPULARITY, PRESTIGE
Psalms 20:7
“Some trust in chariots and some in
horses,
but we trust in the name of the LORD
our God.”
Our
living, and all our glorying is in the …..
….CROSS OF JESUS
And its eternal meaning.
Galatians
6:14
“But God forbid that I should glory, save in
the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and
I unto the world.” (NKJV)
II. OUR BANNER IS A MARK OF OUR
ALLEGIANCE
- Once
we set up our banner, it must never suffer loss.
- Once we set up our standard which
aligns us with Christ, it must always be honored.
If
it marks our alignment….
…
IT MUST MARK OUR ALLEGIANCE
Galatians 2:20
“I have been
crucified with Christ and I no longer
live, but Christ lives
in me. The life I live in the
body, I live by faith
in the Son of God, who loved
me and gave himself for
me.”
- We
truly are marching under the
banner of the …..
.…CROSS
- We are to;
“PREACH CHRIST AND HIM CRUCIFIED”
….lifting up our banner before a
lost
and dying world.
